Designing Space and Connection at Village Camp Truckee

When we began placing luxury tiny homes on the existing RV sites at Village Camp Truckee, we quickly realized just how tight the spacing could get. Some pads left us with barely six feet between units — hardly enough to maintain privacy, let alone create a sense of comfort or community. It was a design puzzle that required both precision and imagination.

Instead of forcing a traditional layout, we decided to play with orientation. By rotating the units and facing them toward one another, we discovered new ways to define space within the constraints. What started as a challenge became an opportunity — the reconfiguration opened up room for a beautiful garden path between the homes, a shared green corridor that softened the density and introduced a natural rhythm to the site. The new layout created intimacy without feeling crowded, giving each guest a distinct sense of place.

Of course, reorienting the homes presented a new challenge: privacy. With front porches now facing each other, we needed to strike a balance between openness and seclusion. Our solution was a simple yet elegant one — a single privacy wall installed along one side of each deck. This approach maintained clear sight-lines and airflow on three sides while providing just enough screening for guests to relax comfortably. Even with units reaching up to 17 feet in height, the covered decks felt spacious, airy, and connected to the outdoors.

The result was something far more dynamic than a row of evenly spaced units. The new configuration encouraged casual interaction between neighbors, a feature that felt right at home in Truckee’s outdoor-oriented community. Guests often come here for biking, hiking, skiing, and snowboarding, and this layout naturally supports that sense of camaraderie — a place where people return from a day on the mountain, kick off their boots, and chat across garden paths as the fire pits glow.

Even for those less inclined toward adventure, the atmosphere invites connection. The covered porches make s’mores a year-round tradition, and the open garden corridors bring a sense of shared experience to what could have been a constrained, utilitarian space. What began as a limitation ultimately became one of the most defining features of Village Camp Truckee — proof that thoughtful design doesn’t just solve problems; it creates opportunities for people to connect.
